Caribbean Reef Squid
by Kristen Thompson
I was a bit on edge during my first night snorkle ever. Shrouded in eighty degree water and darkness (except for my trusty flash light), I was met by a group of five reef squid navigating the dark water. One squid seemed to take an interest in my flash and he began to examine it closely (very close). I was able to get two shots off before it became clear that I was no longer persuing my subject; my subject was persuing me. We gave each other one last once over before he disappeared (I assume to join his swim group). Later, on land, I was thrilled to see my brief encounter had garnered me my first underwater portrait. Equipment: Nikon L18/ Ikelite housing/ Ikelite AF35 Flash
Location: Divi Flamingo Pier, Bonaire
