Blue velvet mantle of Giant Clam
by Alessandro DonĂ
Daedalus reef, above water, is just a rock, barely wide enough to host a lighthouse, with a wooden pier leading to the edge of the reef. Under the surface, it's a fantastic place to dive. The water is of a gorgeous blue, the coral cover is amazingly dense - it's hard to find even a small area that some benthic creature hasn't already claimed for itself. In this densely populated reef, it's not hard to find these Giant Clams, Tridacna maxima, which grow to be more than a foot from side to side. The intense blue of their mantle makes the surrounding water look drab. It's mesmerizing.
